One of the best samples of special weapons of VSS "Vintorez", adopted in 1987, by its characteristics is relevant to the present day. But modern requirements for the possibility of individual adaptation of the weapon to the fighter required its modernization. Such modernization was carried out by the designer TsNIITochMash.

The modernization of Vintorez touched upon the improvement of its ergonomic characteristics and expansion of possibilities of using modern aiming means. The new product became known as "Vintorez Modernized" or VSS-M.
